Ask a Question

This 30-minute webinar will deal with the current position regarding sentencing in both the Magistrates’ Court and the Crown Court – it will deal with the Sentencing Act 2020 and the changes brought about by the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022 regarding the increase in sentence for certain offences and the changes brought about by the Judicial Review and Courts Act 2022 regarding the powers of a Crown Court Judge to remit adult offenders to the Magistrates’ Court for sentence – it will deal with the circumstances in which the Court is obliged to at least consider the imposition of a minimum sentence – it will deal with the sentencing of dangerous offenders – it will deal with the sentencing of offenders of particular concern – it will deal with the offenders who will no longer be released at the half-way point of their sentence and who must wait until they have completed two-thirds of their sentence – it will be hugely relevant for anyone advising clients in the area of sentencing in the office or acting as defence advocate in Court or prosecuting in Court or tasked with advising the justices.

Learning Objectives:

  • The offences for which the sentence on indictment has been increased under recent legislation
  • The circumstances under which offenders have to serve a longer part of their sentence before becoming eligible for release
  • Committals to the Crown Court for sentence
