Assault Offences

This is an introduction and case update on non-fatal offences the person for For Legal on behalf of the Law Training Centre.

Non-fatal offences against the person include some of the most frequently dealt with offences in the criminal Courts. There are a range of offences; we will look at some of the most frequently charged; it’s always useful to have knowledge of these and refresh the basics from time to time.

We will also have a look at some recent cases, you will see that in addition to a couple of points of law that help with our understanding of the differences between assault offences there are often appeals that deal with sentencing.

So we are going to do two things, go over common assault, battery, assaults on emergency workers and Racially and Religiously Aggravated offences, as well as ABH, GBH and GBH with intent, then we will look at some recent cases.

The key legislation includes the Offences Against the Person Act 1861, the Criminal Justice Act 1988, and the Crime and Disorder Act 1998. You should also look at the Sentencing Council Guidelines for these offences.
